Once the policy has been developed it should be placed on bulletin boards, distributed to all employees, and/or discussed in weekly/monthly safety meetings as applicable. You will know you have communicated the information when every employee in the organization can discuss the reporting policy. Refer to Appendix A for a sample policy statement [2].

Sample B — Driver-hiring and qualification policy statement The Company believes that our drivers are our most valuable assets, and are critical to our overall safety results and the success of the organization. Therefore, the personnel selections of The Company are extremely important. This policy has been created to establish our minimum driver qualification and hiring standards. These standards will ensure a consistent level of driver quality.

There was, however, a high degree of cynicism about the intentions of the policies. The most frequently expressed view among all grades of staff was that one of the most important functions of the policy statements was to remove responsibility for the health and safety of the workforce away from the Board. Two points are important here. First is that the view was expressed quite spontaneously by nearly 25 per cent of the sample, in response to an open question about their views. Secondly, the critics did not suggest that the Board was aiming to enter into a partnership with their staff to promote health and safety but rather that they perceived the Board to be buck passing (a common phrase) ... 

The size of the business is not a reliable indicator of the amount of detail which may be needed in an adequate environmental policy. The question is rather whether all the significant environmental risks have been identified and adequate control of them demonstrated. For small businesses where these risks are well understood and control is relatively simple, a single paragraph included within the safety policy may be sufficient to meet most needs. In these circumstances the following sample statement may be found useful as an indication ...
