Salad bars

The bloody mary today is synonymous with the idea of brunch, and at brunch, everyone s a bartender with a secret—pickling seeds, wasabi powder, jalapeno peppers. Restaurants have introduced make-your-own bloody mary carts, more salad bar than bar. As a virgin mary or a bloody shame, the drink is apparently good without vodka. I wouldn t know. 

By the time I reached Jack Ronan s office in the Financial District of San Francisco, my nerves were jangled from a crowded bus and chemical exposures. Soon after we settled into a quiet corner of a salad bar restaurant for the interview, Jack s calming spirit had rubbed off on me. 

Despite significant interest in unconventional weapons, there have been few instances of widespread death or incapacitation due to CBRN use by terrorists, and the number of casualties pales in comparison to those killed by more conventional explosives, armed attacks and arson. Since 1968, more than 14,000 people have been killed by bombing, and nearly 6,000 by armed attack, but CBRN attacks have accounted for less than 20 deaths [41]. The two most notorious unconventional attacks in modern history, Aum Shinrikyo s gassing of a Tokyo subway in 1995 and the anthrax attacks in the U.S. in the fall of 2001, killed a total of 17 people. The food poisoning by the Rajneeshees in Oregon in 1984 has also received much attention. While there were no fatalities when the cult poisoned several salad bars with Salmonella, there were more than 700 injuries. 

Oregon Cult Food Poisoning — Two members of an Oregon cult headed by Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh cultivated Salmonella (food poisoning) bacteria and used them to contaminate restaurant salad bars in an attempt to affect the outcome of a local election. Although hundreds of people became ill and 45 were hospitalized, there were no fatalities.

Many countries do not allow use of S02 or sulfite salts on meats, fish, piocessed meat and fish products, 01 flesh fruits and vegetables. Where permitted, sulfite is helpful in eliminating black spot formation in shrimp. End-use application of sulfite related compounds as. for example, to prevent discoloration of leafy vegetables on salad bars, is now subject to regulation in the United States.

In September 1994, members of the Rajneesh religious cult contaminated ten rural Oregon restaurant salad bars with Salmonella typhimurium in an attempt to influence voter turnout during an election (67). Hundreds of people became ill with salmonellosis. 

Xanthine oxydase has molybdenum in it and is involved in uric acid metabolism and in transferring electrons from one molecule to another. Aldehyde oxidase breaks down toxic purinelike compounds. A molybdenum enzyme named sulfite oxidase stabilizes cysteine (a sulfur-containing amino acid) metabolism and detoxifies sulfite, a food additive banned by the FDA after several deaths and thousands of complaints of breathing problems. It was once used at salad bars to keep vegetables looking fresh. 

This is an area that we can only touch on here because it involves several thousand drugs that have not yet been checked out for their effects on foods, digestion, and assimilation. It should include chemical additives in processed foods and substances like sulfites (now banned from use on salad bars) and monosodium glutamate (MSG), a flavor enhancer used often in Chinese restaurants to which some people react strongly. 

For groceries in town, there s no better place than the Brattleboro Food Co-op (2 Main St., a 802-257-0236). In addition to a huge selection of organic produce and bulk foods, a full-service deli and cafe comes complete with a salad bar, juice bar, and a good selection of store-made soups, salads and entrees. 

Check the board at the front of the cafe for the specials. Four types of soup - some vegan - and an entree are offered daily. Seitan fajitas were the feature on my visit. Hummus, BBQ seitan, tofu egg salad, blackened tofu, avocado, and all kinds of veggies are among the many choices on the make-your-own-sandwich list. The blackened tofu with soy mozzarella and lots of veggies was my favorite. Bunny Hop also has a well-stocked salad bar - pay by the pound or pay 6.95 for all you can eat. 

Steak-eating and cattle-raising are big in Ft. Worth. They even ride the poor beasts in restaurants like Billy Bob s. The Back Porch (3400-B Camp Bowie Blvd., B 817-332-1422), conveniently located a block from both the Amon Carter and Kimball Art Museums, is about as veggie-friendly a place as you ll find. Peruse their extensive salad bar or order a cheeseless pizza. A second location can be found near Texas Christian University (2500 Berry St., b 817-923-0841). 

Near Grants Pass, you ll find a number of places to pick up fresh produce. Sunshine Natural Foods Market Cafe (128 SW H, b 541-474-5044) has a good selection of organic vegetables as well as a reasonably priced soup and salad bar. 

Old Wives Tales is also a great place to bring the children. A colorful playroom, a separate dining room for families, and a well-priced children s menu make this a great family restaurant. A good-sized salad bar is a favorite with vegans.
