Much of the work referred to in this book was, in part at least, funded by the Ergonomics Action Programmes of the European Coal and Steel Commimity or the Safety in Mines Research Advisory Committee of the Department of Minerals and Energy of the Republic of South Africa. 

The Mine Act also directs NIOSH to coordinate the activities of a Mine Safety and Health Research Advisory Committee (MSHRAC). The committee was formed in 1984 and has been active in advising MSHA and NIOSH on various mining-related health issues and potential research areas NIOSH s findings frequently form the basis for rulemaking or increased enforced emphasis by MSHA.
