Health and Safety Aspects. The U.S. EPA has significantly reduced the aHowed levels of antimony compounds in drinking water causing a toxicity cloud over the viabHity of this class of stabilizers. Use of the trapping agent is recommended as the most efficient method for running acyloin condensations for many reasons. The key here was the theory. The pioneers familiarity with both the kinematic and the dynamic theory of diffraction and with the real structure of real crystals (the subject-matter of Lai s review cited in Section 4.2.4) enabled them to work out, by degrees, how to get good contrast for dislocations of various kinds and, later, other defects such as stacking-faults. Several other physicists who have since become well known, such as A. Kelly and J. As we learn from Sims s reviews, many other improvements have been made to superalloys and to their exploitation in recent decades. Solid-solution strengthening, grain-boundary strengthening with carbides and other precipitates, and especially the institution, some twenty years ago, of clean processing which allows the many unwanted impurities to be avoided (Benz 1999) have all improved the alloys to the point where (McLean 1996) the best superalloys now operate successfully at a Kelvin temperature which is as much as 85% of the melting temperature this shows that the prospect of significant further improvement is slight. 

The chain extension step may then take place in the water phase. Hydrazine and ethylene diamine are commonly used chain extenders for waterborne urethane dispersions. The isocyanates react with the diamine chain extenders much faster than with the water, thus forming polyurea linkages and building a high molecular weight polymer. More detailed information regarding the synthesis and process of making waterborne polyurethane dispersions is found in Dieterich s review article [58]. 

Now that we have discussed some details of HAZWOPER, let s review some case histories to see how we can put this in perspective. Case histories are important because they can be used as learning tools.

Stern, eta obtained potentiostatic polarisation curves for titanium alloys in various solutions of sulphuric acid and showed that the mixed potentials of titanium-noble metal alloys are more positive than the critical potential for the passivity of titanium. This explains the basis for the beneficial effects of small amounts of noble metals on the corrosion resistance of titanium in reducing-type acids. Before beginning a detailed discussion of alkene reactions, let s review briefly some conclusions from the previous chapter.
