Rupture disk assembly

There are usually several reactors hnked to a single catch tank. The coefficient of discharge, Ko, is the actual flow divided by the theoretical flow and must be determined by tests for each type or style and size of rupture disk as well as pressure-relieving valve. For rupture disks, the minimum net flow area is the calculated net area after a complete burst of the disk, making allowance for any structural members that could reduce the net flow area of the disk. For sizing, the net flow area must not exceed the nominal pipe size area of the rupture disk assembly [1].

A shaker tube equipped with a 1200-atm. rupture-disk assembly was used by the submitters. The checkers used a 1270-ml. stainless steel rocking autoclave fitted with a thermocouple well that extended into the reaction mixture and a stainless steel 5000-p.s.i. rupture disk. The agitation rate was 58 cycles per second. Attempts to use a magnetically stirred autoclave were unsuccessful. 

Equipment. The liquefaction of coal was studied In a 1 liter magnetically stirred stainless steel autoclave. The autoclave was equipped with a thermowell a gas Inlet port connected to a synthesis gas (Hg C0 ratio of 1 1), or to a hydrogen cylinder and to a pressure gauge a port for connection to a rupture disk assembly and a port for gas discharge. The vertical magentlc rod with dashers stirred the coal, solvent and ash or catalyst particles. The autoclave temperature was measured by a thermocouple placed Into the thermowell. 

The gasket is the part that provides the proper seal to prevent leakage of the cylinder contents past the rupture disk assembly and is constructed of metallic or nonmetal lie materials. 

Tightening the rupture disk assembly to the cylinder valve or to the cylinder itself should be in accordance with the manufacturer s instructions. Tightening to a torque less than the manufacturer s recommendations may result in a leaking device or a device that may rupture at a lower pressure than specified. Conversely, overtightening can result in disk actuation at a lower pressure than specified due to an excessive twisting action that may create wrinkles or distortions in the disk.
