Rubber blends elastic modulus

Mondragon et al ° reported that unmodified and modified NR latex were used to prepare thermoplastic starch/NR/MMT nanoeomposites by twin-screw extrusion. After drying, the nanoeomposites were injection moulded to produce test specimens. SEM of fractured samples revealed that chemical modification of NR latex enhanced the interfacial adhesion between NR and thermoplastic starch (TPS), and improved their dispersion. X-ray diffraction (XRD) showed that the nanoeomposites exhibited partially intercalated/exfoKated structures. Surprisingly, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that clay nanoparticles were preferentially intercalated into the rubber phase. Elastic modulus and tensile strength of TPS/NR blends were dramatically improved from 1.5 to 43 MPa and from 0.03 to 1.5 MPa, respectively, as a result of rubber modification. [Pg.153]

Tackifying resins enhance the adhesion of non-polar elastomers by improving wettability, increasing polarity and altering the viscoelastic properties. Dahlquist [31 ] established the first evidence of the modification of the viscoelastic properties of an elastomer by adding resins, and demonstrated that the performance of pressure-sensitive adhesives was related to the creep compliance. Later, Aubrey and Sherriff [32] demonstrated that a relationship between peel strength and viscoelasticity in natural rubber-low molecular resins blends existed. Class and Chu [33] used the dynamic mechanical measurements to demonstrate that compatible resins with an elastomer produced a decrease in the elastic modulus at room temperature and an increase in the tan <5 peak (which indicated the glass transition temperature of the resin-elastomer blend). Resins which are incompatible with an elastomer caused an increase in the elastic modulus at room temperature and showed two distinct maxima in the tan <5 curve. [Pg.620]

It has been reported (5) that the elastic modulus of ABS resins prepared by either mass or emulsion polymerization can be represented by a single relationship with the dispersed phase volume fraction. This is in agreement with the theory that the modulus of a blend with dispersed spherical particles depends only on the volume fraction and the modulus ratio of particles to matrix phase. Since the modulus of rubber is almost 1000 times smaller than the modulus of the matrix SAN, the rubber particle volume fraction alone is the most important parameter controlling modulus values of ABS resins. Even for rubber particles containing a high occlusion level, as in ABS produced by mass polymerization, the modulus of the composite particle still remains imchanged from pure rubber, suggesting a unique relationship between modulus and dispersed phase volume fraction. Abstract This chapter deals with the non-linear viscoelastic behaviour of rubber-rubber blend composites and nanocomposites with fillers of different particle size. The dynamic viscoelastic behaviour of the composites has been discussed with reference to the filler geometry, distribution, size and loading. The filler characteristics such as particle size, geometry, specific surface area and the surface structural features are found to be the key parameters influencing the Payne effect. Non-Unear decrease of storage modulus with increasing strain has been observed for the unfilled vulcanizates. The addition of spherical or near-spherical filler particles always increase the level of both the linear and the non-linear viscoelastic properties. However, the addition of high-aspect-ratio, fiber-like fillers increase the elasticity as well as the viscosity. [Pg.85]

A lot of work has also been carried out in Brazil when it comes to using this technique for the devulcanisation of EPDM [99]. Waste EPDM from the automotive sector was exposed to microwave radiation for between 2 and 5 min and the DR produced characterised by a DSC and TGA. The degree of devulcanisation was assessed using gel content measurements. Workers from the same Brazilian university [100] have also devulcanised EPDM rubber by microwaves and then blended it with low-density polyethylene (LDPE) in the presence of a peroxide to improve the interfacial interaction between the two phases. The presence of the devulcanised EPDM in the LDPE matrix resulted in a reduction in the deformation and traction strength, but a significant increase in the elastic modulus values and impact strength. Spandex fibres, because of their higher modulus, tensile strength and resistance to oxidation, as well as their ability to be produced at finer deniers, have made severe inroads into the natural rubber latex thread market.
