In locations where the basic constraints cannot be resolved (an efficient route to market is not available), stranded gas reserves occur. Associated gas has in many instances such a fate, since an oil project may be justifiable even if there is no market for the co-produced gas. In such instances, gas is either flared or injected in a suitable structure outside the oil-bearing reservoir, in the hope that later on it would be possible to bring it to use.
