Ross, Ronald

Alphonse Laveran, a French Army physician working in North Africa in the 1880s, was the first to observe malarial parasites in human blood. Their mode of transmission was not understood, however, until Ronald Ross, a British medical officer in India, found the organisms within the bodies of Anopheles mosquitoes. Malaria is caused by four species of parasitic protozoa Plasmodium vivax, P. ovale, P. malariae, satid P. falciparum. These organisms have complex life cycles involving several different developmental stages in both human and mos-... [Pg.208]

I thank Nancy Ross, Ulrich Bismayer, Tiziana Boffa-Ballaran, Jennifer Kung and Ronald Miletich for various collaborations, all of which contributed to this chapter. John Loveday kindly provided material on neutron diffraction at high pressures, and Don Isaak material on RUS. In addition Tiziana Boffa-Ballaran, Michael Carpenter, Simon Redfem, and Ekhard Salje made helpful comments and suggestions for improvement of the original manuscript. [Pg.96]

In 7 902, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine "for his work on malaria, by which he has shown how it enters the organism and thereby has laid the foundation for successful research on this disease and methods of combating it". [Pg.444]

Ultimately, with the dawn of second-generation pesticides, the tide turned away from biological control agents toward the chemical control of insect pests. Interestingly, it was not an agricultural crop, but rather a pubhc health discovery that led the way. Sir Ronald Ross, a British doctor who allowed an Anopheles mosquito to feed on a malaria patient, observed the malaria parasite in the gut of the... [Pg.97]
