A few cases have been reported of exacerbation of HPPD by risperidone (Risperdal) (Abraham and Mamen 1996). The exact reason for this is uncertain, but the fact that risperidone and LSD both act at 5-HT2 receptors is probably causative. Also, two cases have been reported of an exacerbation of HPPD by selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (Markel et al. 1994). [Pg.354]

Risperidone (Risperdal). Risperidone is also approved by the FDA for the treatment of acute mania. It acts as an atypical antipsychotic at doses up to 4-6mg/day. Over this dose, and at lower doses in children and the elderly, risperidone acts more like a typical antipsychotic in that extrapyramidal side effects are common. [Pg.86]

Risperidone (Risperdal). Risperidone was the second atypical antipsychotic released in the United States. It is actually quite different from clozapine, and, in general, members of the class of atypical antipsychotics are often not all that similar among themselves. Risperidone blocks D2 receptors as do haloperidol and fluphenazine, but it probably blocks a lower percentage of D2 receptors, more like clozapine than haloperidol. In addition to blocking dopamine D2 receptors, risperidone also blocks serotonin type 2 receptors. [Pg.118]

Atypical Antipsychotics. The so-called atypical antipsychotics are not well studied in the treatment of ADHD. However, a few case reports have indicated that risperidone (Risperdal) may reduce the impulsivity and hyperactivity of ADHD. There is also preliminary evidence that risperidone may be effective in treating tics. Although the usefulness of risperidone and other atypical antipsychotics in treating ADHD needs more study, this may prove another viable treatment alternative for patients with ADHD and tics or agitation. [Pg.249]

Atypical antipsychotics may be helpful in managing the delusions and agitated behavior that can accompany dementia. These medications, include risperidone (Risperdal), quetiapine (Seroquel), ziprasidone (Geodon), aripiprazole (Abilify), and olanzapine (Zyprexa). All antipsychotics, typical and atypical, appear to increase the risk of death in patients with dementia and psychosis. This appears as a warning in the package inserts of the newer drugs. A prudent approach is to discuss this risk with the caregiver, use the lowest effective dose, and monitor for effectiveness. [Pg.301]

Among these choices, bnspirone is preferred if the patient is also experiencing anxiety. If the patient is depressed and agitated, a SSRI should be tried first. Second line choices inclnde carbamazepine (Tegretol) or one of the atypical antipsychot-ics—ziprasidone (Geodon), risperidone (Risperdal), olanzapine (Zyprexa), quetiap-ine (Seroquel), or aripiprazole (Abilify) can be tried. If psychotic symptoms are present, one of the atypical antipsychotics should be tried first. [Pg.310]

Formal study of the newer, atypical antipsychotics in the treatment of STPD is limited to a pilot study of risperidone (Risperdal). This study suggested that risperidone, given in low doses (0.5-1.0mg/day), is well tolerated by patients with STPD and helps reduce the paranoia and social isolation of the disorder. Despite this limited formal study, atypical antipsychotics are increasingly used on an empirical... [Pg.320]

Flagyl (metronidazole, antimicrobial agent) tablets are available in 200 mg and 400 mg strengths. Istin (amlodipine, a dihydropyridine calcium-channel blocker) is available as 5 mg and 10 mg tablets. Risperdal (risperidone. [Pg.70]
