Ring synthesis 6- methyl-2-phenyl

The preparation of the various l,2,4-trithia-3-germacyclopentanes by transformation of another ring can be illustrated by the synthesis of 3- 2,4,6-tris[bis(trimethylsilyl)methyl]-phenyl -3-mesityl-l,2,4-trithia-3-germacyclopentane 199 <19950M1008>. This compound can be prepared in low yield by the reaction between tetrathiagermolane 200 and diphenyldiazomethane (Equation 20). 

Greenhouse evaluation in a random herbicide screen showed that 3-chloro-4-methyl-6-[m-(trifluoro-methyl)phenyl)pyridazine was sufficiently active to serve as a lead for a synthesis project. Related 3-chloropyridazines were prepared by a sequence based on the addition of acyl anion equivalents of substituted benzaldehydes to the appropriately substituted acrylate esters. Using 3-chloro-pyridazines as key intermediates, a variety of other 3-substituted-pyridazines were prepared. The effect of altering substitution at each position of the pyridazine and phenyl rings on herbicidal activity was examined. 

An achiral ketone (S OS) was used to prepare protected alcohol 5.206 via condensation with S-phenethylamine, and that protecting group was also an auxiliary Removal of the benzylic group and re-protection with Boc allowed Birch reduction s of the aromatic ring to give 5.207. Ozonolysis in methanol led to methyl 4-(N-Boc amino)-6-methyl-3-oxoheptanoate, 5208. In this synthesis, the phenyl ring functioned as the carboxyl surrogate and asymmetric induction in 5.208 arose from the chiral auxiliary introduced earlier in the sequence. 

Bielectrophiles have found appreciable applications in the synthesis of ring-fused systems, especially those involving [5,6] fused systems. The following serve to illustrate these applications. Reaction of pyrazole with (chlorocarbonyl)phenyl ketene (214) (Type 1, Scheme 6) readily formed the zwitterionic pyrazolo[l,2-a]pyrazole derivative (215) (80JA3971). With l-methylimidazole-2-thione (216), anhydro-2-hydroxy-8-methyl-4-oxo-3-phenyl-4//-imidazo[2,l-6][l,3]thiazinium hydroxide (217) was obtained (80JOC2474).
