Ring decoration

Pimaricin is an important antifungal agent used in human therapy for the treatment of fungal keratitis as well as in the food industry to prevent mold contamination. The enzymes and the gene cluster responsible for their production by Streptomyces natahnsis was identified recently. The cluster contains a P450 that is responsible for ring decoration [99]. 

USI can be built using units of 10 T atoms. The T 10-unit consists of doubly (l,3)-connected double 4-rings decorated with T2-dimers (bold in Figure 1). TlO-units, related along c by a pure translation and along A by a screw rotation of 180 about b, are coimected into the undulating be layer. The two-dimensional PerBU is depicted in Figure 1.

Polyketides have many diverse chemical structures including erythromycin, which will be mentioned again later. These chemicals include fused-ring aromatic compounds, compounds decorated with sugars, and compounds with large stretches of double bonds. Each of these compounds has different biological activities and utilities, but they are all made in nature by very similar biochemistry.
