Winchester rifle

The Winchester repeating rifle lets its user fire up to 15 shots by working a lever every few seconds. It will become known as the gun that won the West.

The start of The American Civil War would appear to have given Winchester and the Henry rifle a golden opportunity, but in fact the Union Army was not disposed to such complicated devices as repeating rifles and bought very few. On the other hand, sales to State Militia units and to homesteaders in isolated areas were sufficient to carry the company thro the war. 

In the years after the Civil War, many companies who had prospered from the conflict were unable to make the transition to peacetime and collapsed. Winchester, however, was astute enough to promote his rifle overseas to such countries as Peru, France and particularly, Turkey. The latter bought rifles and ammo to the tune of 1.46 millions... 

Some inventors who named weapons after themselves include Samuel Colt, the Colt revolver, Henry Deringer, Jr., the derringer pistol, Dr. Richard J. Gatling, the crank machine gun, Col. John T. Thompson, the submachine or tommy gun, and Oliver F. Winchester, the repeating rifle.
