Besides organizing the Advances in Catalysis (together with V. I. Koma-rewsky and Sir Eric Rideal), he established a Research Laboratory in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, realizing that since literature pertaining to the cigar industry was scanty and methods were mainly empirical he would have to inquire continuously into every step of cigar making. 

A 1932 conference in Oxford, sponsored by the Faraday Society, promised to decide the outcome of the Langmuir-Polanyi dispute. The three keynote speakers were supposed to be Eric Rideal from Cambridge, and Freundlich and Polanyi from Berlin but, as it turned out, neither Freundlich nor Polanyi was able to attend the meeting. Kemball kept an active interest in physical adsorption for several years, but a defining change came in 1946 with the award of a fellowship from the Commonwealth Fund of New York for research and travel in the United States. Influenced by Eric Rideal s long-standing friendship with Hugh S. Taylor, who had known Rideal since World War I when they worked together in London on the catalysis of carbon monoxide oxidation, Charles chose to spend his fellowship year with Professor Taylor at Princeton University. Here he was introduced to experimental work on catalysis and.
