Retrofit Project

Interestingly, many companies use standard checklists for controlling die development of a project from initial design dirougli plmit shutdown. It serves a form for approval by various staff and management functions before a new or retrofit project can mo e ahead. 

As far as utilities and off-sites are concerned, it is also difficult to generalize. Small retrofit projects are likely not to require any investment in utilities and off-sites. Larger-scale retrofit might demand a major revamp of the utilities and off-sites. Such a revamp of utilities and off-sites can be particularly expensive, because existing equipment might need to be modified or removed to make way for new utilities and off-sites equipment. 

If the capital cost of new heat transfer area is expressed in the form of Equation 18.6, then this will lead to poor retrofit projects. The problem with Equation 18.6 is that the optimization is likely to spread the new heat transfer area in the network in many locations, without incurring a cost penalty associated with the many modifications that would result. To ensure that new heat transfer area is not spread around throughout the existing heat exchanger network, a capital cost correlation should be used that is of the form ... 

The methodology addresses new design, debottlenecking and retrofit projects, and it can be applied to any type of process industries. 

The requirement for building clean has arisen in recent years as more stringent clean rooms have become more popular. Imposing a clean construction protocol on contractors can lengthen the schedule and increase cost. The protocol should be developed during the construction document phase and be an integral part of the bid documents. Once the decision is made to work clean, protocols developed should be followed by everyone on the jobsite associated with the clean areas. A poorly conceived and enforced protocol will be a costly and futile exercise. The tendency to build clean on every new or retrofit project should be carefully evaluated and a practical protocol should be developed consistent with the needs of the project.

Nowadays, building new refinery units is very costly. Therefore, many retrofit projects to the existing crude oil distillation system are considered to increase the production capacity of the refinery by increasing the throughput.
