The biosynthesis of serum albumin takes place in the liver. Normally, its half-life in the human being is 19 days, though this may change in response to disease or dietary availability of essential amino acids. It is interesting to note that rat serum albumin is biosynthesized in the form of "proalbumin," that is, the basic albumin molecule has attached to its N-terminus a peptide, Arg-Gly-Val-Phe-Arg-Arg, which is lost upon the secretion of the protein into the extracellular compartment. [Pg.185]

The diagnosis of IK begins with the distinction between active and residual corneal disease. At the time of active corneal inflammation, the most common symptoms include pain, tearing, photophobia, decreased vision, and blepharospasm. The bilateral or unilateral inflammation may be caused by active infection or an immune response to disease. [Pg.516]

New analgesics have been successfully developed by animal testing, possibly because the emotional response to experimental pain in an emimal is akin to the human response to disease or accidental injury. This emotional response does not generally occur in a subject who has volrmteered to imdergo laboratory experiments that can be stopped at any time, and it probably accoimts for the fact that a placebo gives relief in only 3% of these cases. [Pg.323]

Variation in plasma protein concentrations can occur secondary to decreased albumin concentrations associated with hepatic cirrhosis, and nephrotic syndrome (Table 2). Increased (apadd glycoprotein concentrations are associated with the stress response to disease states such as myocardial infarction, inflammatory disease, and postsurgically. " A more relevant problem... [Pg.580]

Interferon A biological response modifier (a substance that can improve the body s natural response to disease). Interferons interfere with the division of cancer cells and can slow tumor growth. There are several types of interferons, including interferon-alpha, -beta, and -gamma. These substances are normally produced by the body. They are also made in the laboratory for use in treating cancer and other diseases. [NIH]... [Pg.134]

Low or normal serum Cu concentrations own in the range of values obtained for some patients with RA deserves some comment. These values may be the result of a failure of this aspect of the physiologic response due to depletion of liver Cu stores. Depletion may result from increased turnover resulting in Cu excretion [26,27] and a failure to replete these stores either through loss of appetite or inadequate diet. Failure of serum Cu to increase maximally as a physiological response to disease could lead to chronic disease. [Pg.216]

As mentioned before, study of the neurotoxic affects of metals has arisen largely in response to diseases caused by environmental pollutants. Such studies are described for manganese in which... [Pg.289]
