Use personal protective equipment — Engineering controls are not always feasible or may not provide enough protection. That s where respiratory protection comes into play. An abrasive-blasting respirator must be NIOSH-approved and cover your head, neck, and shorilders to protect you from rebounding abrasive. In addition, other personal protective equipment, such as hearing protection, eye and face protection, helmet, leather gloves, safety shoes or boots, and fall protection may be needed. 

The types of PPE have different functions, including hearing protection, eye protection, respiratory protection, protection of the skin, and general protection in the form of protective clothing, and safety helmets, harnesses and lifelines. Hearing protection was discussed in the previous section.

Helmet means a rigid respiratory inlet covering that also provides head protection against impact and penetration. 

Respiratory inlet covering means that portion ofa respirator that forms the protective barrier between the user s respiratory tract and an air-purifying device orbreathing air source, or both. It may be a facepiece, helmet, hood, suit, or a mouthpiece respirator with nose clamp. 

The operators use personal protective equipment, such as safety helmet, safety boots, eye protection, ear protectors, respiratory equipment, and safety belts. Instructions, procedures, training and easy access to the equipment aim to promote this barrier .
