Statistical experimental design is characterized by the three basic principles Replication, Randomization and Blocking (block division, planned grouping). Latin square design is especially useful to separate nonrandom variations from random effects which interfere with the former. An example may be the identification of (slightly) different samples, e.g. sorts of wine, by various testers and at several days. To separate the day-to-day and/or tester-to-tester (laboratory-to-laboratory) variations from that of the wine sorts, an m x m Latin square design may be used. In case of m = 3 all three wine samples (a, b, c) are tested be three testers at three days, e.g. in the way represented in Table 5.8 ... [Pg.134]

We have said that every time the calibration analyzes a new unknown sample, this amounts to an additional validation test of the calibration. It can be a major mistake to believe that, just because a calibration worked well when it was being developed, it will continue to produce reliable results from that point on. When we discussed the requirements for a training set, we said that collection of samples in the training set must, as a group, be representative in all ways of the unknowns that will be analyzed by the calibration. If this condition is not met, then the calibration is invalid and cannot be expected to produce reliable results. Any change in the process, the instrument, or the measurement procedure which introduces changes into the data measured on an unknown will violate this condition and invalidate the method If this occurs, the concentration values that the calibration predicts for unknown samples are completely unreliable We must therefore have a plan and procedures in place that will insure that we are alerted if such a condition should arise. [Pg.24]

Unfortunately, the chapter on biochemistry, pharmacology and toxicology of sulfones and sulfoxides planned for this volume did not materialize. In view of the importance and interest of methionine sulfoxide, we decided to include this chapter although, unlike the other chapters, it does not deal with the title groups in toto but only with a single representative of them. [Pg.851]

The chemical process reflected by the basic recipes was modelled using the PPSiM-recipe editor. Each of the nine product groups was represented by one recipe for a nominal size of 100 kg.
