Renewables solar-generated electricity

Past experience shows that as the equipment needed for new technologies starts to be mass produced, its prices drop. The cost of wind power-generated electricity has already been reduced to one quarter of that of the first installations. An ultrathin-film solar collector manufacturer (Nanosolar) claims that it will soon market collectors at costs that are severalfold less expensive than today s PV prices. We do not know if that particular claim is correct or not, but we know that time is on our side. Therefore, it is realistic to expect that as markets expand, the costs of mass-produced renewable energy devices will also drop and the cost of transition to a solar-hydrogen economy over several decades will become not only affordable, but will also create jobs and an economic boom. We should remember that drastic changes can occur rapidly after all, a century ago electricity was a luxury that only 3% of the households had. The same will occur with renewable energy over the 21st century. [Pg.137]

In the renewable energy processes, electric meters are required to determine the rate of power generation, the flow of electricity to and from the grid, and the efficiencies of solar collectors, wind turbines, electrolyzers, and fuel cells. Peak shedding is used to increase the cost-effectiveness of the total operation. [Pg.385]

Fourth, electrolysis presents a path to hydrogen production from renewably generated electrical power. From an energy perspective, electrolysis is literally a way to transform electricity into fuel. Electrolysis is thus the means of linking renewably generated power to transport fuels markets. Currently, renewable solar, wind, and hydro power, by themselves, produce only electricity. [Pg.234]

The cell efficiency of a single crystalline Si solar cell reaches 18- 0 % in the mass production line. The poly crystalline and cast Si solar cell shows 15-18% on average. The cell efficiency of amorphous Si solar cells (a-Si) is 8-9 %. Silicon solar cell generates electric power of direct current with about 1 V, a few combinations of which are suitable to apply to water-electrolysis. Therefore, if Si solar cell is combined with SPE, the system efficiency will be 10 % in practical use. This value is the highest among the systems which produce hydrogen with use of renewable energies as will be described here in-below. [Pg.85]

Most renewable energy sources are, ultimately, concentrated forms of solar energy. However, there are two distinct approaches to generating electricity directly ... [Pg.2638]
