Renewable hydrogen is mainly an economic option in countries with a large renewable resource base or a lack of fossil resources, for remote and sparsely populated areas (such as islands) or if surplus electricity from intermittent renewable energies must be stored. In the French context, hydrogen can be used to regulate electricity production and to use to their fullest the nuclear plant investments. They can also help optimise the use of intermittent renewable energy sources. 

As to the types of analyzers, only the continuous ones will be discussed here. This is because the intermittent information provided by sampling analyzers, such as chromatographs, do not meet the safety requirements of most renewable energy processes. One of the most important families of analyzers utilize the various spectroscopic and radiant energy techniques. 

Autonomous power systems can be based on renewable energy (RE) units, such as wind turbines, photovoltaic systems or small hydro power stations and fossil-fuel generators. Due to the intermittent nature of renewable energy, storage devices and/or appropriate demand management strategies are necessary when conventional generators are not included in the system.
