Even in the Renaissance, the deceptively realistic imitation of nature in art n/as considered proof of an artist s superior technical ability. The Field of Flowers playfully takes up this artistic tradition of imitating nature and sets the petals in motion, causing them to rhythmically open and close. The photovoltaic module that supplies the energy for this is in the center the petals have a reflective coating on the outside, so that they mirror their surroundings when closed. [Pg.72]

Most of sentiments expressed in the preface to the earlier edition of this book still hold. In the past five years metal-directed chemistry and the use of metal ions to control the stereochemical course of reactions have undergone something of a renaissance. The interface of inorganic and organic chemistry is found in supramolecular chemistry. It is true to say that an understanding of the interactions between metal ions and ligands is at the basis of much contemporary supramolecular and metallosupramolecular chemistry. [Pg.315]

These instances, tied to politics and literature and specific to Britain, tend to fuse one Hermes-type in the other. In the visual arts of this period. Mercury is all too often drowned in academicism, relegated to a mere figure among others in the classical evironment. The further one goes from the Renaissance, the more he appears thus. The earlier epoch was expert in the art of giving the gods their... [Pg.42]

Kearney (1971) and Kirsch (1981) have pointed to three major ways in which nature was viewed in the Renaissance, the organicist, the mechanical, and what they call the magical tradition and which Debus (1977) called the Chemical Philosophy. The six concepts identified in this chapter and depicted on the cube in Figure 1 correlate impressively with these three traditions. The mechanical tradition as we saw in discussing the kinetic theory of gases relates closely to the three concepts N, t, and 3D, number, time, and spatial extension. These meet at an apex of the cube. The opposite apex unites A, ft, and 3d, continuity, time s arrow, and inner complexity. These we meet in all discussions of organisms. And the magical tradition prepares us to accept apparently irreconcilable opposites, wave/particle, reversible and directional time, the whole and its inner complexity. (Debus 1977, 1980) These pairs appear on opposite faces of the cube. [Pg.110]

In the Renaissance, the illuminator s reds included cinnabar (mercuric sulfide), a substance well-known to alchemists. Vermilion red was extracted from Brazilwood, and a purplish red was derived from the root of the madder plant.112 The sap of the shrub Pterocarpus draco produced a popular red called dragon s blood. Yarn had it that dragon s blood was the co-mingled blood of an elephant and a dragon who had slain one another in battle.113 Blues were obtained from stones (azurite, lapis lazuli) and from plants (the seeds of turnsole or Crozophora in alkaline solution).114 Lapis lazuli must have seemed nearly as mysterious and difficult to obtain as dragon s blood, since at that time it was found only in a mine in north-east Afghanistan. [Pg.26]

In the humanistic light of the Renaissance, the knight and his chivalric order seemed patronizing and, as Cervantes represented them, even ridiculous. [Pg.34]

During the Renaissance, the classical Greek views of nature were finally challenged by the likes of Paracelsus. " Paracelsus extended an earlier view of matter that held that it was a union between an exalted sulfur of the philosophers ( Sophie Sulfur —characterized often as male) and an exalted mercury of... [Pg.5]

From the sanetuary of Harran, there was a transfer of alehemy and metallurgy to Islamie Sufism. During the Italian Renaissance, the same knowledge became available from Constantinople through the enthusiastic acquisition of manuscripts by Cosimo de Medici. From Renaissance Italy, it made its way to Britain where the Elizabethans received it enthusiastically. [Pg.7]
