Relation with Governments

Sometimes government intervention into the affairs of business is thought to be a recent phenomenon. However, for well over 100 years, government has exercised a degree of control over how U.S. businesses conduct themselves. (Businesses in other countries do not always have to confonn to the same set of standards imposed by the U.S. government on U.S. businesses—more on that later.) Opinions on this matter can be described by the extreme positions namely, government should set and prescribe in detail the conditions under which businesses operate versus the opinion that free enterprise, of itself, is ultimately the best regulator of business practices and will eventually correct any abuses that develop in the conduct of business matters. For well over 30 years. [Pg.346]

Energy supply and price is an issue that is important and pervasive and largely politically determined. Before 1973, oil from the Persian Gulf at 2.00 per ban-el was displacing domestic oil, at 3.25 per barrel. Thus, to protect U.S. oil producers, import quotas and tickets to import (worth 1.25 per banel) were imposed. During this time, U.S. consumers were forced to pay more for their energy requirements than consumers in other countries (notably Europe and Japan), which obtained all their oil from OPEC at 2.00 per barrel. [Pg.347]

Prior to 1973, there was a surplus supply of crude oil in the United States. To avoid overproduction with the concomitant depression in the price of crude oil, the Texas Railroad Commission controlled the level of production of oil wells in Texas (other states had similar regulations). This provided some stability in cmde oil pricing. However, in 1973, it became apparent to the oil ministers of OPEC countries that oil-importing countries could not do without the Middle [Pg.347]

While the FTC and the FDA have been in operation for many years, there is now a proliferation of other agencies that regulate businesses. Much has changed in the arena of business/govemment relations in the 20 years that have elapsed since the Wei (6) book was published. Perhaps the two most important [Pg.348]

Few would argue that it has been (and still is) necessary for government to establish standards of conduct to protect the public from abuses of the less scrupulous operators of businesses. However, government and special interest groups sometimes feel that standards considered too stringent by industry person- [Pg.349]

Filter Selection. A variety of product- and process-related factors govern filter selection. Considerations include the characteristics of the fluid to be filtered, ie, its chemical composition and compatibiHty with the filtration system (inclusive of the membrane, filter hardware, piping, etc), the level of bioburden present, specifications on effluent quaHty, the volume of product to be filtered, flow rate, and temperature. [Pg.139]

The chemical composition of many systems can be expressed in terms of a single reaction progress variable. However, a chemical engineer must often consider systems that cannot be adequately described in terms of a single extent of reaction. This chapter is concerned with the development of the mathematical relationships that govern the behavior of such systems. It treats reversible reactions, parallel reactions, and series reactions, first in terms of the mathematical relations that govern the behavior of such systems and then in terms of the techniques that may be used to relate the kinetic parameters of the system to the phenomena observed in the laboratory. [Pg.127]

Whether in the public or private sector, employee-management relations are governed by rules. In the absence of a union, the rules are unilaterally set by management. Legal restraints on the employer are relatively minor. With a union the rules are jointly negotiated between employer and employees and take the form of a written, enforceable contract. The locus of rule-making authority is shifted simultaneously, the possibilities for appeal to outside agencies are increased. [Pg.88]

New glycolipids have to be synthesized to get further insights into liquid crystal properties (mainly lyotropic liquid crystals), surfactant properties (useful in the extraction of membrane proteins), and factors that govern vesicle formation, stability and tightness. New techniques have to be perfected in order to allow to make precise measurements of thermodynamic and kinetic parameters of binding in 3D-systems and to refine those already avalaible with 2D-arrays. Furthermore, molecular mechanics calculations should also be improved to afford a better modeling of the conformations of carbohydrates at interfaces, in relation with physical measurements such as NMR. [Pg.308]

A nonprofit trade organization that acts as a clearinghouse for medical and technical information about asbestos and asbestos-related products, with emphasis on safety, health, and environmental issues. Works with government agencies to develop and implement industry-wide standards for exposure to asbestos dust emissions into community air and water and exchanges information on methods and techniques of asbestos dust control. Maintains a reference library on asbestos-related subjects. [Pg.269]

By stoicheiometry we understand the calculus of changes in composition that take place by reaction it corresponds to kinematics in the analogy with continuum mechanics for its provides the framework within which chemical motions must take place, irrespective of the forces that bring them about. By kinetics we understand the relations that govern the speed of the composition changes and this bears some analogy to the dynamics of continua. Just as the latter can only be built on a proper understanding of the kinematics, so the analysis of stoicheiometry must precede that of kinetics. [Pg.150]

The PCD commander believes he has good working relations with PMCD, regulators, county government, CSEPP, and the local community. He is willing to work cooperatively on whatever plans evolve. [Pg.46]

If a rotation operation must be included in order to bring two domains on a surface to coincide, we speak of rotational domains . If, by no means, a regular adlattice can be brought into a periodic relation with the underlying substrate lattice, the superstructure is incommensurate. In this case, the lateral interactions are so strong that the substrate registry cannot govern the lateral order. [Pg.215]

How the chemicals move and break down increasingly determine a grower s relations with his neighbors, his customers, and his governments. [Pg.106]
