Technical associations develop safety standards for the guidance of members and the general public. The latter often include organizations or individuals who make use of the products of a particular industry. While these industry safety standards are not regulations and do not have the effect of law, in many cases such standards have been adopted by federal, state, provincial, and local authorities. In such cases, industry safety standards do become regulations. Nevertheless, where an industry safety standard exists, it behooves the manufacturer or user of a product or process to comply with the standard.

Compressed gases are packaged and transported in cylinders, portable tanks, over-the-road vehicles known as cargo tanks or tank trucks, and railroad tank cars, as well as other approved specialized containers. Containers of compressed gases are shipped by highway, rail, water, and air. Certain constraints on the allowable modes of transportation will sometimes be encountered depending upon the specific gas and the hazard classification of the gas.
