Xanthylidene does not react measurably with cyclohexane at room temperature (Table 5). Thermolysis of DAX at high temperature does, however, give some of the expected coupling product 9-cyclohexylxanthene. The crossover experiment (1 1 C6H12, C6D12) reveals that this product is not formed by the abstraction-recombination sequence. This observation is consistent with the direct insertion characteristic of a singlet carbene.

The scheme indicated in Figure 1 (excitation, charge separation, charge recombination) is most likely to occur when the product state has the same spin multiplicity as the reactant state, or when the product species are held together (e.g., by chemical bonds) for periods that allow intersystem crossing to occur. However, the charge separation-recombination sequence is not the only type of process that photoexcitation can achieve. An example is when the product state is held only loosely by a solvent cage and the entities therein can diffuse apart and have independent reactive identities. Volkov et al. described a hybrid in vitro-in vivo recombination method involving formation of a heteroduplex between two homologous sequences in vitro and transformation into bacterial cells11251. Mismatches present in the heteroduplex are randomly repaired by the host cell, creating recombinant sequences composed of the elements of each parent. This approach may be particularly useful in recombining large genes or entire operons. 

Switch recombination sites share only little and patchy sequence homology at variable distances from the actual breakpoint of recombination. When anions derived from a,jS-unsaturated esters (145) and LDA at —70 °C are reacted with an aldehyde followed by immediate quenching, only the a-adducts (146) are obtained (with little erythro-threo selectivity).
