IX.2 REAGENT SOLUTIONS AND GASES The reagents are listed alphabetically. One asterisk indicates that a reagent has a limited stability and should not be kept for longer than 1 month. Two asterisks indicate that the reagent should be prepared freshly and discarded after use. Reagents with no asterisk can be kept for at least one year after preparation. 

The following table summarizes the uses of some important reagents in organic chemistry. The reagents are listed alphabetically, followed by a brief description of the uses of each and references to the appropriate text sections.

These few questions serve to demonstrate that there must be great interest in characteri2dng chemical compounds by means of their reactive functional groups. The most important group-specific reagents for postchromatographic derivatization are listed alphabetically in Table 4 below ... 

In Tables S1-S6, we list the species of interest by class of compound and then by formula within it rather than by the analyte or methodology of analysis. For each species, the methods for which it was used are Usted alphabetically and then for each method, the elements are listed alphabetically therein. In this chapter, we have not attempted to discuss regularities as to why a given reagent works better for a given analyte. Indeed, such patterns have scarcely been discussed in the literature—analytical chemistry is generally a rather empirically based discipline and remains so for the current chapter. 

Some comments on and explanations of the applications listed are in place here. As is seen below, not all applications are of the solvents as such in many cases they are added to other materials to improve their properties, to initiate reactions and accelerate their rates, and as reagents that are consumed by transforming other compounds to more useful ones. Following is an alphabetical lexicon with brief definitions of the key words used in Table 5.1. 

Whoever the author is, the works are listed here with the works of the empiricists because they contained systematic accounts of the theory and practice of alchemy, and these works are notably devoid of allegory or deliberate obscurity. Anachronistically systematic, the author(s) used the letters of the alphabet to symbolize alchemical principles, materials, and operations and arranged them in tables. Recipes were then given as combinations of these letters— including recipes for some interesting new reagents mineral acids and an alcohol that would burn. 

The list below contains the most important of the known spray reagents. These are given in alphabetical order (of a principal component) in Part I. Part II is classified alphabetically according to compounds or compound classes to be identified and lists the reagents customary for each of these. Spray reagents which are named after authors or have well known abbreviations are compiled in Part III. 

Preparative aspects of inorganic chemistry are covered by the Encyclopedia of Chemical Reactions compiled by C. A. Jacobson and C. A. Hampel (Reinhold, 1946-59) which lists known chemical reactions in eight volumes. Elements are arranged alphabetically by their chemical symbol and for each its reactions with other elements or compounds are listed, with the formula, a comment and the bibliographic reference. Each volume contains an index to reagents and to substances obtained, arranged alphabetically by formula.
