Discussion with operators provide substantial insight. The purpose of the discussion should be to develop an understanding of operators perspec tives of the unit, their foci for the operation, and their decision sequence in response to deviations and off-specification products. Two additional, albeit nontechnical, goals of this discussion are to establish rapport with the operators and to learn their language. The operators will ultimately be required to implement recommendations developed by analysts. Their confidence is essential to increase the likehhood of success. The following topics should be included in the discussion. [Pg.2553]

It is essential to develop contacts within both companies to create an atmosphere of two-way communication. The toller should feel comfortable in asking for advice or assistance and this is best achieved by building rapport with their primary contacts from their client company. After an audit, the points of contact can be assigned responsibility for ensuring completion of individual action items. [Pg.115]

A degree of rapport must be built between the analyst and the worker in order for them to feel that their commentary will be treated confidentially. This is important in situations where an incident has not been reported in the past and the workers do not wish to open themselves or their colleagues to potential sanctions. Under such conditions, it may be appropriate for the analyst to provide the overall results of the study, rather than the actual content in terms of events etc. [Pg.157]

[Pg.50]

Mentoring relationships are unlikely to work unless they are volimtary associations. This implies that the mentee will want to be mentored in the first place, regardless of who the mentor is. It also implies that the mentor-mentee match has to be a good one, i.e. one that is desirable to both parties. A mentoring relationship is perceived as desirable if, for example, it fulfils the mentor s and mentee s expectations. A relationship is also desirable if rapport is built quickly. [Pg.44]

Some mentees were much more comfortable discussing technical issues, but a lack of deep rapport made it difficult for them to open up on behavioural topics. [Pg.90]

Greater emphasis on rapport-building skills for both mentors and... [Pg.91]

However, this view seems to let mentors off their responsibility for relationship building. If a mentor understands the art of establishing rapport (for example, if the mentor offers trust, empathy, and wants to empower the mentee), and if there is a clear goal to achieve, people will find their points of similarity. In fact, every pair has far more points of similarity than dissimilarity ... [Pg.142]

Although highly important, the skills of rapport-building are difficult to define. When asked to describe rapport, managers observations can be distilled into five characteristics ... [Pg.154]

In addition to establishing rapport with their mentees, mentors should also be capable of building rapport with individuals in general. This is because one of the roles a mentor fulfils is fhat of a networker/facilifafor. [Pg.155]

At the end of the first year, rapport is built and confidence created. The relationship can now progress to arrangements for learning. [Pg.185]
