Some of the above methods can be miniaturized, and the instrumentation can be adapted for use in field situations (see Section 4 of this book (Potential Use of Screening Methods and Performance Evaluation)), and some can be used only in the laboratory. In the former case a spot sample can be taken, processed and analysed in the field without the need for sample preservation, transport, or storage. Since many of these methods are rapid, they can provide either quantitative (concentration) or qualitative (above or below a threshold) data on water quality in a time-scale that enables a timely and appropriate response (for instance in the case of an accidental spillage) or the rapid mapping of water quality in a wide area. Table 1.3.3 shows the main classes of chemical priority substances and the different methods that can be used for their analysis.

This field trial was conducted in the Hardt catchment area in Alsace (France). A number of on-site analytical methods (multiparameter probe, immunoassays test kits, UV spectrophotometer) was evaluated for measuring the impact of anthropogenic pressures on water quality within the context of operational and investigative monitoring within the WFD. However, this section focuses on the use of a portable Pastel UV spectrophometer for the rapid mapping of concentrations of nitrate in a catchment.

Jackson et al. (43) proposed using pressed pellets of biologically certified reference materials for calibrations of rat brain images. The authors determined the elemental distributions and concentrations of Cu, Zn and Fe by LA-ICP-QMS (laser spot size 60 xm and scan speed 120 pim s ) in whole rat brain sections (100 xm thickness) and the physiologically important elements P and S were also analyzed. The distributions and concentration ranges for these elements demonstrate the utility of this technique for rapid mapping of brain thin sections (43). 

Using phenol red as a sensitive pH indicator in the presence of low buffer concentration (2 niM triethanolamine (TEA), pH 7.5), an assay has been developed for the reliable colorimetric determination of TK activity. This new continuous, generic pH-based method proved suitable for the quantitative determination of kinetic parameters, for individual substrates, for the rapid mapping of an enzyme s substrate tolerance, as well as for the HTS of TK variants.
