Rail shipment multi-unit cars

By Rail In insulated and uninsulated tank cars (shipment by rail in cylinders and in portable tanks is also authorized, as is the currently seldom used method of shipment by rail in multi-unit tank car tanks. [Pg.244]

Bulk rail shipment of compressed gases is authorized under DOT and TC regulations in containers of three major kinds—single-unit tank cars, multi-unit tank cars, and fixed tanks on tank cars such as specification 107A tank cars. Adaptations of existing tank car specifications and proposed specifications for new types of cars must be approved by the Tank Car Committee of the Association of American Railroads (AAR). [Pg.81]

Multi-unit tank car tanks are commonly known as TMU tanks, ton tanks, or ton containers. This name originated from their capacity in terms of chlorine. Currently, these tanks are most often transported in highway van trailers properly blocked and braced against movement. Occasionally, they are still shipped on a rail car underframe. This was the original transportation mode for these tanks many years ago (with rail shipments usually consisting of 15 containers per car). [Pg.104]
