Radiation vegetables

Land/atmospheric interfacial processes which impact climate and biological activity on earth are illustrated in Figure 3. Emissions of carbon dioxide, methane, nitrogen dioxide, and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) have been linked to the transmission of solar radiation to the surface of the earth as well as to the transmission of terrestrial radiation to space. Should solar radiation be an internal process or an external driver of the hydrologic cycle, weather, and air surface temperatures Compounds of sulfur and nitrogen are associated with acidic precipitation and damage to vegetation, aquatic life, and physical structures. [Pg.11]

Ascorbic acid is probably the most labile bioactive compound in fruit juices and fruit and vegetable pieces, as we described in the first part of this chapter. Retention of this phytochemical after the nonthermal treatments ranged from 47% to 100%, depending on the intensity of the applied treatment and the product. For example, the greatest losses of vitamin C were found in fresh-cut red lettuce and melon treated with IR and HHP (Fan and others 2008 Wolbang and others 2008), respectively. However, the use of gamma radiation in various vegetables retained 100% of their total ascorbic acid content (Fan and others 2008). [Pg.332]

The recovery of vegetation in a tropical rainforest in Puerto Rico — after plants were deliberately subjected to lethal doses of gamma radiation — closely resembled secondary succession after other types of disturbances, such as mechanical stripping and treatment with the Picloram herbicide (Jordan 1969). [Pg.1704]

The stability of C60 and C70 solutions in vegetable oils has been studied in air and under inert atmosphere, after thermal processing and under the action of UV radiation. In all cases it has been found that C60 and C70 are prone to form adducts with the fatty acid chains of the vegetable oils. The adducts are formed both by radical and Diels-Alder mechanisms. The pharmaceutical valency and potential of such adducts has also been discussed. [Pg.317]

Any increase in ultraviolet radiation will exacerbate the danger to herbivores. Ozone depletion by 25% leads to an increase of 50% in ultraviolet B over ambient levels (El-Sayed, 1988). Will livestock be drastically affected if levels rise more in the future Will animals be able to shift to nocturnal activity If not, will large portions of the vegetation be rendered useless for domestic stock and wild species or will animals have to be fed indoors Will humans be affected ... [Pg.296]

Cisplatin was first characterized as a radiation sensitizer using hypoxic Bacillus megaterium spores (53). Radiation sensitization by cisplatin was confirmed in vegetative Escherichia coli with a maximum sensitizer enhancement ratio of 1.77 in anoxic bacteria at a cisplatin concentration of 50 uM (54). Zimbrick et al. (55) extended these studies to other platinum complexes. The earliest studies in mammalian cells used hypoxic V-79 Chinese hamster cells and showed a small radiation sensitization with 8 iM of cisplatin (56). Nias and Szumiel (57) first reported that pretreatment of Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells with a platinum complex could sensitize well-oxygenated cells to radiation. Wodinsky etal. (58) showed that cisplatin potentiated the effect of whole-body radiation therapy in mice inoculated intraperitoneally with P388 leukemia compared with either modality alone. Therapeutic potentiation was found in MTG-B subcutaneous tumors and intracerebral RBT when the animals were treated with cisplatin and radiation (59). [Pg.49]
