Quality-of-life questionnaire

Sometimes you may also see quality-of-life (QOL) data collected for your clinical trial. Quality-of-life data are collected to measure the overall physical and mental well-being of a patient. These data are usually collected with a multiple-question patient questionnaire and may be summed up into an aggregate patient score for analysis. Some commonly used quality-of-life questionnaires are the SF-36 and SF-12 Health Survey, but there are quite a few disease-specific QOL questionnaires available to clinical researchers. 

The Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short Form Health Survey and the Rhinoconjunctivitis Quality of Life Questionnaire measure not only improvement in symptoms but also parameters such as sleep quality, nonallergic symptoms (e.g., fatigue, poor concentration), emotions, and participation in a variety of activities. 

Two food allergy specific questionnaires have been developed and published under the auspices of Europrevall. The first measures EIRQL in children aged 0-12 years and is parent administered "Food Allergy Quality of Life" questionnaire (FAQLQ-PF DunnGalvin et al., 2008) and the second measures quality of life in teens (FAQLQ-TF Flokstra-DeBlok et al, 2008).

A broader measure of outcome is the change in quality-of-life after UFE. Health-related quality-of-life questionnaires usually measure parameters such as energy, vitality, mood, pain, physical energy, social functioning, and sexual function [26, 27]. There has been relatively little written about the impact of UFE on quality-of-life, in part because until recently there have been few validated fibroid-specific quality-of-life questionnaires. The overall effectiveness of Xolair treatment was clearly reflected in measures of the asthma-related quality of life. Patient s self-assessment of asthma-related quality of life, using the validated asthma-related quality-of-life questionnaire (AQLQ) (16), showed a clinically significant change from baseline of 0.5 units improvement in both treatment groups for all domains at the end of both treatment stabilization and steroid-reduction periods. Importantly, a significantly greater improvement over placebo was seen in Xolair-treated patients for each of the individual domains (activities, emotions, symptoms, environmental exposure) and overall scores (p = 0.02).
