As an alternative to commercial quadrupole based ICP-MS measurements at low mass resolution ( / 300), in 1996 Yiang and Douglas15 proposed a quadrupole ICP-MS system which allows a maximum mass resolution of 9000. At a mass resolution of 5000 the sensitivity was comparable to that of a commercial double-focusing sector field ICP-MS operated at the same mass resolution. Due to the very high continuum instrumental background of about lOOOcps no commercial high resolution quadrupole instrumentation with an inductively coupled plasma source exists and the development of high resolution quadrupole based ICP-MS has ceased. 

In principle, all powerful element-specific methods that are able to monitor continuously the effluents of separation processes commonly in the range of a few mimin-1 and in element concentrations of some Klpg liter-1. A well-suited method is based on modern element-specific quadrupole mass spectrometry (MS) with an inductively coupled plasma (ICP) interface to the separation unit [e.g., liquid chromatography (LC) or field-flow fractionation (FFF)].Tlie ICP-MS detection can also be used for continuously characterizing the effluent of any kind of packed column (Metreveli and Frimmel, 2007). Other elements were measured by a Perkin-Elmer SCIEX ELAN 6100 DRCII Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) instrument equipped with a cyclonic spray chamber, a concentric nebulizer and a dynamic reaction cell (DRC). In the vented (standard) mode, no reaction gas is present in the cell and the instrument shows the typical characteristics of a quadrupole-based ICP-MS apparatus. When the gas is introduced into the cell an ion-molecule reaction takes place that can be tailored so as to eliminate spectroscopic interferences. Experimental conditions are summarized in Table 10.2.
