In order to use fluid inclusions from lacustrine halites for detailed paleoclimate interpretations, it is important to have air temperature and water temperature records from the study area. The modern records serve as the reference against which fluid inclusion homogenization temperatures are compared. Information on the temperatures of saline lakes in Africa and Canada may be found in Hammer (1986). Other sources of saline lake temperatures are Carpelan (1958) for the Salton Sea, California, Eubank Brough (1980) for Great Salt Lake, Utah Smith et al. (1987) for Owens Lake, California, Gavrieli et al. (1989) for the Dead Sea, Israel and Jordan, and Casas et al. (1992) for Qaidam Basin, Qinghai Province, China. 

In Shandong Province, only three coal gas explosion accidents happened, but dust participated in nearly all the coal gas explosions. Whereas, in Yunnan, Jiangxi, Anhui, Guangxi, Jiangsu, Chongqing, Gansu and Qinghai Province, most of the explosion accidents happened without dust.

Qinghai Province lies on the Tibetan plateau and has a population of 4 million comprising Han Chinese, Tibetans and the Wee people. The majority of the population relies on subsistence agriculture for their livelihood and the area is severely iodine deficient. The prevalence of cretinism has been estimated as exceeding 10% by the Ministry of Public Health. Iodized salt prophylaxis was introduced in 1978 and the cretin rate has fallen greatly since then, particularly in the eastern counties of the Province. 

The subject of endemic cretinism has been bedevilled over the years by the fact that iodine deficiency disorders appear to express themselves very differently from country to country. We hope that those observations on the cretins of Qinghai Province add one more piece to the immense jigsaw puzzle of endemic cretinism.

Sociedad Quimicay Minera de Chile (SQM) began construction of the first phase of the Minsal project, and production of 80,000 tpy KCI was scheduled for 1996. Full production capacity would be 300,000 tpy. Construction work at the joint venture project between China and the Dead Sea Works of Israel is proceeding, which will increase the annual capacity at the Golmud plant in Qinghai Province to 1 million tonnes KCI.
