An especially interesting case of oxygen addition to quinonoid systems involves acidic treatment with acetic anhydride, which produces both addition and esterification (eq. 3). This Thiele-Winter acetoxylation has been used extensively for synthesis, stmcture proof, isolation, and purification (54). The kinetics and mechanism of acetoxylation have been described (55). Although the acetyhum ion is an electrophile, extensive studies of electronic effects show a definite relationship to nucleophilic addition chemistry (56). [Pg.411]

Purification of a chemical species by solidification from a liquid mixture can be termed either solution crystallization or ciystallization from the melt. The distinction between these two operations is somewhat subtle. The term melt crystallization has been defined as the separation of components of a binaiy mixture without addition of solvent, but this definition is somewhat restrictive. In solution crystallization a diluent solvent is added to the mixture the solution is then directly or indirec tly cooled, and/or solvent is evaporated to effect ciystallization. The solid phase is formed and maintained somewhat below its pure-component freezing-point temperature. In melt ciystallization no diluent solvent is added to the reaction mixture, and the solid phase is formed by cooling of the melt. Product is frequently maintained near or above its pure-component freezing point in the refining sec tion of the apparatus. [Pg.1989]

Electro-osmosis has been defined in the literature in many indirect ways, but the simplest definition comes from the Oxford English Dictionary, which defines it as the effect of an external electric held on a system undergoing osmosis or reverse osmosis. Electro-osmosis is not a well-understood phenomenon, and this especially apphes to polar non-ionic solutions. Recent hterature and many standard text and reference books present a rather confused picture, and some imply directly or indirectly that it cannot take place in uniform electric fields [31-35]. This assumption is perhaps based on the fact that the interaction of an external electric held on a polar molecule can produce only a net torque, but no net force. This therefore appears to be an ideal problem for molecular simulation to address, and we will describe here how molecular simulation has helped to understand this phenomenon [26].
