The work was carried out in a Stock high-vacuum apparatus (see Part 1, p. 66) because of the sensitivity of these compounds to air, moisture, and stopcock grease. Figure 8.12b shows an individual module comprised of 16 parallel individual MF reactors. The module had two levels the reactor level and a manifold level, both fabricated in PDMS. The individual reactors have distinct emulsiflcation and polymerization compartments but share inlets and a single outlet. The M reactor was comprised of eight modules, two manifolds, and two syringe pumps. The syringe pumps were each connected to a manifold. One pump/manifold combination supplied monomer solution to the dispersed-phase inlet (A) of each module, whereas the other delivered continuous-phase liquid to the continuous-phase inlet (B) of each module.

Ballast orifice (vacuum technology) An orifice upstream of the mechanical pump that can be used to allow dilution of the pumped gas with dry gas to ensure that vapors in the pumped gas do not condense during compression in the mechanical pump. The ballast orifice also allows the foreline portion of the vacuum pumping manifold to return to ambient pressure in case the mechanical pump stops because of a power failure or a broken belt. This avoids Suck-back.
