Pulsatile flow devices

The behaviour of the fluid around the valve can be studied using the steady flow device for the visualization of the flow patterns. With the steady flow device only the behaviour in condition of systolic peak is observable, but it is already a good indication. A pulsatile pump for the visualization of the flow patterns in pulsatile flow condition is being designed.

FIGURE 20.16 The Heaitmate II (Thotatec Corporation, Pleasanton, California) is an axial-flow ventricular assist device currently under development. Unlike the pusher plate and pneumatic sac designs shown in Fig. 20.15, the Heaitmate II provides continuous flow support without pulsatile pressure changes. The Heartmate II is much smaller than the Novacor. Thoratec, and Heaitmate VE VADs. 

While main textile processing techniques come from historical knowledge of conventional textile and clothing industry, they have evolved, and new dedicated processes are being created [2]. These are customized to meet specific needs of implantable devices, where process is individual on each application in its own biological environment. Indeed, it is understandable that, for instance, requirements differ between fibrous stmc-tures that have to withstand pulsatile blood flow and blood pressure compared to fibrous structures that aim to induce and promote osteogenesis.
