Polychlorinated and polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzo-p-furans, which are byproducts of combustion, can also be sampled in air nsing the high-volume air sampler and the quartz filter and PUF cartridges depicted in Figure 15.27. The dioxins and furans are determined by high-resolntion GCMS. Detection limits of 10-20 fg/m are possible for these compounds in air when 300-400 m of air is sampled (121).

NPEO. Although good recoveries for NPEO in wastewaters are easily achieved by percolation through octadecylsilica cartridges" , this method obviously cannot be used when large volumes of water are required. We report here for the first time concentrations of NPEO in coastal seawaters (Table II), recovered using PUF, which is also an efficient extraction system for phenolic compounds in water. ... 

Sampling systems used to collect pesticides in the atmosphere are usually made up of a pump, a glass cartridge, a particle filter, and sorbents that trap the compounds in the gaseous phase. The sorbents can be polymeric resins or PUF. Silica gel has also been used. Of the resins, studies have... 

Two types of sorbent cartridges are used for sampling cartridges containing PUF cylinders and quartz microhber prehlters, and cartridges containing PUF/XAD-2 polymer sandwiches and quartz microhber prehlters. 

Fischer et al. proposed a simple method for recovering analytes based on backflushing of the sampling cartridge (filled with Cl8) with 20 ml methanol or w-hexane. In their pioneer study on the presence of phthalate esters in the Swedish atmosphere, Thuren and Larsson used polyurethane filters connected in series.Compounds adsorbed to the PUF filters were extracted with acetone hexane in an ultrasonic bath. More recently, Otake et al. extracted the esters adsorbed in a charcoal tube by sonication with 1 ml of toluene for 10 min. These authors proved that longer sonication times did not improve the efficiency of the extraction (97.5 to 115%). Soxhlet can also be used to extract the analytes from the sorbent cartridges.
