The ultrasound meal accommodation test (UMAX) was developed at Haukeland University Hospital on the basis of close interaction between scientific and clinical work in patients with dyspepsia. Before entering the protocol, the patients have been carefully studied with history, physical examination, blood tests, testing for H. pylori and upper endoscopy. In some cases, additional examinations are performed to rule out organic causes of their symptoms. The protocol presented here is the mainstream clinical protocol. In scientific studies, other elements are often added. A 500-ml liquid meal of commercial meat soup (Toro clear meat soup, Rieber Son A/S, Bergen, Norway) containing 1.8 g protein, 0.9 g bovine fat, and 1.1 g carbohydrate (20kcal) is ingested over a period of 4 min. The soup is preheated and then cooled to 37°C to improve imaging quality by reducing the amount of air bubbles. Psychometric evaluation is also performed...

CTT has been the dominant approach in psychometric theory for the past 100 years. Although IRT has been aroimd since the late 1960s (Lord and Novick 1968), until computer programmes were accessible to researchers it was not widely adopted. Its use is now reported in various literatures including healthcare (Chan et al. 2004), education (Kane 1987) and clinical psychology (Cooke and Michie 1997), to name a few. It is important, then, to pursue using such an approach in the field of assessment of patient safety culture as this technology becomes an expected standard in psychometric evaluation. 

Through the initial web-based literature search on Medline and Web of Science, performed in March 2012, we identified 26 publications on the use of the HSPSC in a European country, which were published between January 2003 (when the HSPSC had originally been developed) and February 2012. We reviewed these publications focusing on instrument development (i.e. the translation and/or adaptation process), data collection process (e.g. in a pilot or field study) and psychometric evaluation (i.e. tests performed and key results of these tests) in different coimtries.
