In terms of self-care, NIOSH (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2002) has published a Traumatic Incident Fact Sheet for emergency workers that is educational and, at the same time, offers numerous suggestions for managing traumatic stress on-site at an incident and later after a disaster worker has returned home. Still, more research is needed to determine whether early interventions such as psychological first aid can deter the onset and progression of traumatic stress disorders in disaster personnel (National Child Traumatic Stress Network, 2005).

Psychological first aid is a programme which appears to be effective in the early stages of the response to a terrorist incident. Its aims are listed in Box 7.3.

Endothermic reactions are much less common. The endothermic dissolution of ammonium nitrate in water is the basis of the instant cold packs that are included in some first-aid kits. They consist of a plastic envelope containing water dyed blue (for psychological reasons) and a small tube of ammonium nitrate, which is broken when the pack is to be used.

Schedule III - These chemicals have less abuse potential that those in the first two categories but their abuse may lead to moderate or low physical dependence or high psychological dependence.
