The bacterium Pseudomonas denitrificans is capable of this kind of metabolism utilizing nitrate as a terminal electron acceptor rather than oxygen. This bacterium can use oxygen as a terminal electron acceptor if it is available, and aerobic respiration is more efficient than anaerobic respiration. [Pg.328]

The structures of three Cu(II) azurins from A. denitrificans (8), P. aeruginosa (10, 11), and Pseudomonas denitrificans (50) have been determined to 1.8, 2.7, and 3.0 A resolution, respectively. In the case of P. aeruginosa there are four molecules in the asymmetric unit but only two in the case of A. denitrificans, which has yielded the most detailed information. Although these two azurins differ in their sequences at 49 positions, their three-dimensional structures are remarkably similar. The A. denitrificans Cu(I) structure has recently been determined, and relevant data are summarized in Table III (9). [Pg.386]

Three of the most important changes that were made in the approach to the problem were (a) to add the power of genetics and molecular biology to the armory of other methods that had previously been used, (b) to use a different organism, the aerobic Bij-producer Pseudomonas denitrificans, (c) to apply extensive... [Pg.166]

There are also an increasing number of non-P450 type biohydroxylases. Examples are the n-octane co-hydroxylase of Pseudomonas oleovorans and the n-decane hydroxylase of Pseudomonas denitrificans, which have been shown to be also responsible for epoxidation of 1-octene and for O-demethylation of heptyl methyl ether120 241. [Pg.1067]

Amicyanins function as electron carriers in the respiratory chains of some me-thylotrophic bacteria, e.g., Thiobacillus versutus [92]. They transfer single electrons from methylamine dehydrogenase to a cytochrome c [78] which then transfers the electron to cytochrome c oxidase. Amicyanin from Pseudomonas denitrificans has a molecular mass of 11.6 kD and contains 106 amino acid residues. Amicyanin contains one /J-sheet more than the eight of plastocyanin and pseudoazurin, the result of several additional amino acids at its N-terminus [78] (Fig. 15). Like pseudoazurin, amicyanin is found exclusively in bacteria. [Pg.116]

Figure 21 Mechanism for the synthesis of precorrin-3B from precorrin-3A. In nature there are at least two distinct enzymes that can catalyze the synthesis of the hydroxyl gamma lactone derivative of precorrin-3A. In Pseudomona denitrificans this reaction is catalyzed by CobG, which likely utilizes a bound nonheme iron to activate molecular oxygen. In R. capsulatus, this reaction is mediated by CobZ, which harnesses the oxygen-binding ability of a flavin. Figure 21 Mechanism for the synthesis of precorrin-3B from precorrin-3A. The best understood system of dissimilatory nitrate metabolism is that of Pseudomonas denitrificans, with the proposed transport scheme shown in Fig. 39 (406 408). The nitrogen intermediates shown between nitrate and Nz are those which have been isolated and identified with a particular reductase enzyme. There remains the possibility of additional intermediates in the form of transient oxidation states of nitrogen. The single electron chain of Oz respiration here has been replicated into parallel pathways, each with the general form donor 6 —> c — reductase acceptor. On the NzO reductase path, the particulate cytochrome Cb52... [Pg.523]
