The various transcription-control elements found in eukaryotic DNA are binding sites for regulatory proteins. In this section, we discuss the identification, purification, and structures of these transcription factors, which function to activate or repress expression of eukaryotic protein-coding genes. 

I-mediated expression of eukaryotic protein coding genes and they underscore the possibility that some endogenous trypanosome genes, like the VSG and the PARP genes, might indeed be transcribed by RNA polymerase I. 

If the end goal of cloning is to have a cloned gene expressed in a cell, the entire coding sequence must be doned intact. Furthermore, if a cloned eukaryotic gene is to be expressed in bacteria (to make recombinant proteins), the gene must not contain introns, which could not be processed in a prokaryotic cell. In these cases it is more convenient to done cDNA rather than DNA restriction fragments.

Eukaryotic mRNA processing is much more complex and has many consequences for gene expression. Most obviously, many eukaryotic genes contain introns, which are found in the primary transcript. For the mRNA to be translated into a useful protein, some way to remove them from the transcript and still preserve the coding...
