Protective colloid PVAL

Polyvinyl alcohols (PVAl) are manufactured by saponification of vinyl acetate polymers (PVAc). Properties of PVC using PVAl as a protective colloid are influenced by the solution viscosity of the PVAl, i.e. the degree of polymerization of the PVAc and the degree of saponification. Polyvinyl alcohols of 75-90% hydrolysis are primary suspension agents for S-PVC, whereas polyvinyl alcohols of 25-40% hydrolysis are secondary suspension agents, which control the agglomeration of the primary particles. Partially hydrolyzed PVAc can be block or random polymers. [Pg.116]

Poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVAL), Manufactured by saponification of poly(vinyl acetate). As a special water-soluble and organic-insoluble high-polymer, it is used as a viscosity regulating agent, as a thickener and/or protecting colloid in dispersions and adhesives. Water as diluent has obvious advantages and has been developed for many free-radical polymerizations. Thus suspension polymerization involves the dispersion of the non-miscible monomer in water as droplets (0.1-5 mm diameter) by means of agitation and protective colloids or dispersing agents (e.g. polyvinyl alcohol, PVAL), and adding a monomer-soluble initiator. The polymer ends up approximately the same size as the original droplets and the system can be viewed as many small bulk polymerizations. As water is the continuous phase the viscosity remains constant and good heat transfer occurs. This process is used for PVC. [Pg.24]

Over the years poly vinyl alcohol (abbreviated PVOH or PVAl) proofed to be the most preferred protective colloid for that purpose. In a cementitious environment PVOH will be partly saponified and also absorbed of fine particles within a mortar, i.e. cement and fillers. This results in a film forming of the dispersed polymer and finally the polymer film is not redispersible any more. Since the polymer film (acting as a binder) is distributed throughout the cement matrix it improves dramatically the adhesion, abrasion resistance, flexural strength, flexibility, water impermeability/water repellency (hydrophobicity) and workability of a cementitious system. [Pg.332]

The Group Vlll metal colloids were among the first known hydrogenation catalysts for organic compounds. In the 1940s, PVAl, PVA, and PMMA were used to protect these colloids. Later, silk fibroin, nylon, PETF, etc. were used to this end. [Pg.192]
