Propyl ketones

Commercial methyl n-propyl ketone, produced synthetically by dehydrogenation of the corresponding alcohol, consists of a mixture of methyl n-propyl and diethyl ketones in the approximate ratio of 3 ta 1, and contains at least 97% af these ketones, the balance being secondary amyl alcohol. It is a colorless liquid, soluble in alcohol and ether but only very slightly soluble in water.

Small quantities of the sjunmetrical ketones (CHjjjCO and (CHjCHjCHjjjCO (di-n-propyl ketone) are formed as by-products these can easily be removed by fractional distillation through an efficient column. An excess of the cheaper reagent, acetic acid, is employed the resulting acetone is readily removed by washing with water and little di-n-propyl ketone is formed under these conditions.

Ketonic hydrolysis to di-iso-propyl ketone. Mix 15 g. of the ester with 30 ml. of glacial acetic acid, 10 ml. of water and 10 ml. of concentrated sulphuric acid, and reflux in a flask coimected by a ground glass joint... 

When the cyclic component is benzene or naphthalene, the -ic acid or -oic acid of the acid corresponding to the acyl group is changed to -ophenone or -onaphthone, respectively. For example, C5H5—CO—CH2CH2CH3 can be named either butyrophenone (or butanophenone) or phenyl propyl ketone. 

Diethyl Ketone. Diethyl ketone [96-22-0] (3-pentanone) is isomeric with methyl / -propyl ketone (2-pentanone), which has similar solvent and physical properties. Diethyl ketone is produced by the decarboxylation of propionic acid over Mn02—alumina (165), Zr02 (166), or Zr02 or Th02 on Ti02 (167,168). Diethyl ketone can also be produced by the hydrocarbonylation of ethylene (169—171). It is used as a solvent and a reaction intermediate. 

Solvents used for dewaxing are naphtha, propane, sulfur dioxide, acetone—benzene, trichloroethylene, ethylenedichloride—benzene (Barisol), methyl ethyl ketone—benzene (benzol), methyl -butyl ketone, and methyl / -propyl ketone. Other solvents in commercial use for dewaxing include /V-methylpyrrolidinone, MEK—MIBK (methyl isobutyl ketone), dichloroethane—methylene dichloride, and propfyene—acetone.
