Type I iodothyronine deiodinase is defined as the enzyme which catalyses the (mono)deiodination of the inner or the outer ring of different iodothyronines and which is inhibited by jrM concentrations of PTU [5-8]. In rats and humans, such enzyme activities are present at high levels in liver, kidneys and interestingly also in thyroid, and at low levels in many other tissues [5-8]. The deiodinase is associated with the microsomal fractions of these tissues but is only active in the presence of a cytoplasmic cofactor [5-8], Also, in the absence of cytosol, deiodinase activity is stimulated by simple thiols such as dithiothreitol (DTT) but the physiological cofactor has not yet been identified with certainty. The effects of synthetic and natural thiols will be discussed in Section 2.5. [Pg.85]

But there is another method — the use of heterogeneous blends of polymers [45, 46], To this end, electrical properties and distribution of the filler (carbon black) in the mixtures of polyethylene and thermodynamically incompatible polymers were investigated. [Pg.136]

In this section an alternative derivation of the governing equations for granular flow is examined. In this alternative method the peculiar velocity C, instead of the microscopic particle velocity c, is used as the independent variable in the particle property and distribution functions. The transformation of these functions and the governing equation follows standard mathematical procedures for changing the reference frame. The translational motion of an individual particle may be specified either by its microscopic velocity c relative to a fixed or Galilean frame of reference, or by its velocity relative to a frame of reference moving with the local velocity of the granular material Yd-... [Pg.520]

Experience has shown that one might benefit substantially from deriving the governing transport equations after having transformed the property and distribution functions so that they are dependent on the peculiar velocity variable (2.59) instead of the microscopic particle velocity c. This means that the... [Pg.520]

Ky currents in vascular smooth muscle cells have diverse properties. The existence of multiple Ky currents within a given artery, or of the differential distribution between different vascular beds, is unknown. More understanding of the properties and distribution of individual Ky channels may shed some light on their physiological role, and remains an important goal for future research. Inhibition of Ky channels may be involved in hypoxia and vasoconstrictor-induced membrane depolarization. The predicted modulation of Ky channels by vasodilators and vasoconstrictors will also be an important area of future investigation. [Pg.213]
