A cooled 10% solution of 1 mol of phosgene in toluene was added with stirring to a cooled solution of 1 mol of 2-methyl-2-propyl-1,3-propanediol and 2 mols of dimethylaniline also dissolved in toluene, at such a rate that the temperature of the mixture was maintained at about 25°C. The mixture was allowed to remain at this temperature for several hours, then... [Pg.248]

Diethylmethyl propylmalonate is reacted with LiAIH4, then H2SO4 to give 2-methyl-2-propyl-1,3-propanediol. That is reacted with phosgene in toluene to give the chlorocar-bonate which is in turn reacted with butylamine to give N-butyl-2-methyl-2-propyl-3-hy-droxy-propyl carbamate. [Pg.1562]

A solution containing 52.8 parts of 2-methyl-2-n-propyl-l,3-propanediol and 128 parts of acetone is added with stirring to 112 parts of liquid phosgene at such a rate that the temperature of the reaction is maintained at -5° to 0°C. The reaction is stirred one hour at about 0°C then cooled to -15°C. A cooled 30% solution of 32 parts of sodium hydroxide is added with stirring to the reaction at such a rate that the temperature is maintained at -15° to -5°C. [Pg.2174]

The mixture is stirred for an additional Vi hour at about 0°C then cooled to -20°C. 180 parts of cooled ammonium hydroxide solution (28.6% NH3) are added while cooling and with stirring at such a rate that the temperature rises slowly to 20°C and stirring is continued for an additional Vi hour. The mixture is poured with agitation into 1,700 parts of ice water. The solid which separates is removed by filtration and dried. Recrystallization from water gives 55 parts (63% of theoretical yield) of 2-methyl-2-n-propyl-l,3-propanediol dicarbamate, MP 104° to 105°C. [Pg.2174]

The name used by Chemical Abstracts and U.S.PJKin for meprobamate is 2-methyl-2-propyl-1,3 propanediol dicarbamate. It can also be called 2,2-di(carbamoyloxymethyl) pentane or 2-methyl-2-propyltrimethylene carbamate. The empirical formula is C Hng Oh with a molecular weight of 218.2. ... [Pg.209]

Meprobamate has been synthesized by several procedures (See Figure U). The first step is to synthesize 2-methyl-2-propyl-1,3-propanediol. This has been done1 1 by reacting 2-methyl pentanal and formaldehyde in presence of KOH. The diol has also been prepared by reducing 2-methyl-2-n-propyl malonic acid, diethyl ester with lithium aluminum... [Pg.216]
