Air conditioned theaters produced a two-pronged demand for comfort cooling. Consumers liked it, asked for it, and patronized those theaters offering it. Increased attendance at cooled theaters showed that the installation and operating costs were worthwhile expenditures, causing more theater owners to decide to purchase comfort cooling systems. [Pg.25]

Reliability is generally understood to measure the degree of certainty that a piece of equipment will perform as intended. Relays, in contrast with most other equipment, have two alternative ways in which they can be unreliable. They may tail to operate when they are expected to, or they may operate when they are not expected to. This leads to the two-pronged definition of dependability, the measure of certainty that the relays will operate correctly for all faults for which they are designed to operate and security, the measure of certainty that the relays will not operate incorrectly for any fault. [Pg.415]

After we bemoaned the common perception that a short book is a low-level book, we reiterated our commitment to the principle that in treating general concepts in a concise way we would not sacrifice depth, rigoi or clarity. Our criteria for including material continue to be its importance and relevance to the student, not its difficulty. To achieve this, we decided on a three-pronged approach. [Pg.722]

It is well-known, for instance, that if one applies tension at properly timed intervals to pull a stretched wire or string, it begins to oscillate laterally. Lord Rayleigh performed an experiment of this kind by attaching a stretched wire to a prong of a tuning fork when the latter... [Pg.380]

A neat form of construction has been designed by the Brown Fintube Company of America. On both prongs of a hairpin tube are fitted horizontal fins which fit inside concentric tubes, joined at the base of the hairpin. Units of this form can be conveniently arranged in banks to give large heat transfer surfaces. It is usual for the extended surface to be at least five times greater than the inside surface, so that the low coefficient on the fin side is balanced by the increase in surface. An indication of the surface obtained is given in Table 9.20. [Pg.546]

This design was closely followed in the experimental model and in the later instruments. The experimental model (October, 1940) had as test body a dumbbell of two thin-walled glass spheres 4 mm. in diameter sealed to a glass rod 6 mm. long. A silica fiber 8 fi in diameter was stretched between the prongs of a silica fork, and the glass dumbbell was cemented with shellac to the middle of the fiber, perpendicular to it. A plane glass mirror 2 mm. square was also cemented near the middle of the fiber. The suspension was balanced... [Pg.670]

Flask clamps are made to fit a wide range of sizes of flask. These are devices for holding flasks while the necks are being worked and enable the whole flask to be rotated easily. They usually consist of a handle with three or four sprung prongs which hold the body of the flask. Some clamps are made so that they can be adjusted to fit a range of flask sizes. [Pg.21]

Some apparatus must be made to a definite size. The external diameter can be measured by an ordinary calliper gauge (Figure 6,1). The internal diameter can be measured either by the prongs at the... [Pg.22]

Best approach toward a general solution of all problems of induced stability appears to be a two-pronged surface treatment involving electrostatic and steric protection. In order to increase repulsion energy, zeta should be increased and to enable the particles to resist compression to a distance of separation less than that at E, a bulky molecule should be attached firmly to the surface. Some systems do not accept both steric and ionic protection but for those that do, the combination shows most promise. Er should not be increased without some assurance that the particles will not be subjected to drastic compressive forces. [Pg.99]

This dual-pronged mechanism results in a rapid and profound desensitization of BCR-coupling to the RasErk MAPkinase cascade. [Pg.412]

Teaching how to make and use an invention, also known as enablement, is a requirement for obtaining a patent. Establishing an invention s usefulness, also known as utility, is a separate requirement for patentability. An application can meet the utility requirement but still fail to demonstrate enablement. During the trial phase, the district court conducted a two-pronged analysis of the application and concluded that the application lacked both utility and enablement. However, on appeal, the Federal Circuit focused only on the utility requirement. [Pg.451]

The distributions of the radon measurements from the Chester, NJ region and the nearby region centered around Morris County, NJ and that at Syracuse, NY are similar to those measured in Northern Virginia and Maryland and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area and are not plotted in Figure 3 to avoid overcrowding. [Pg.66]

Recommendation 4 (Figure 6-11) Of course the basics of a Buck switcher layout must be followed. The diode must be very close to the IC. Its cathode goes to a test prong labeled SW. We realize that almost everyone wants to look at this node, and it must be made available. [Pg.159]
