Logistics is a cross-cutting, multi-disciplinary function covering, according to the AFNOR reference model, no less than 25 trades and 600 activities spread along the value chain. It plays a primary role from day-to-day business to major corporate projects. Its field of operation has widened, its missions have diversified - becoming more complex than before - and its competencies have developed, just as the range of its methods has become more elaborate. This transformation has occurred over the last 15 years and has not yet ended. 

In the first two steps, the academic literature currently available is reviewed and also explored practical experience firom the author, who has more than 17 years of practical experience in leading and developing logistics and supply chain management projects worldwide to identify and define the components of a Demand Driven Supply Chain. 

The article referenced at the beginning of the chapter reports the scope of SCM activity in a research project at Ohio State University headed by Douglas M. Lambert, professor of transportation and logistics. His research recommends that supply chains have three elements (1) network structure, (2) business processes, and (3) management components. The nine management components the researchers define are worth repeating here ... 

The quote by Francis Quinn taken from the periodical Logistics reflects a common response in companies. In essence, they scramble to project the image of responding to the challenges of supply chain management (SCM). How tasks associated with SCM are defined very much depend on the eyes of the beholder. To start the diseussion, Chapter 1 defined the terms supply ehain and supply chain management. This chapter describes how those dehnitions are applied in praetiee. 

In a word, the supply chain logistics planning optimization under uncertain environment in the future will gain momentum with the development of enterprises practice of management and the research projects of more unknown fields will constantly emerge. Thus, the in-depth speculation and exploration might be endless. 

Anna Baraniecka is Assistant Professor of Business Administration at the Wroclaw University of Economics (WUE), where she received her PhD in Business Logistics. She has extensive experience in supply chain management in the pharmaceutical industry as she has engaged in numerous consulting projects in the field. One of her most important research topics is Efficient Consumer Response (ECR). She has been interested in supply chain maturity issues for several years. She is co-author of a novel supply chain maturity model tailored to the pharmaceutical industry.
