Professionalism future direction

Overall, firms have had to coordinate planning submissions across cross-functional teams working together to ensure that information presented in the application is reflective of company practice at the time of the submission. This has created the need for professionals with both regulatory and technical skills. These professionals need to be ready for change, have an awareness of future direction of legislation affecting products, and have the capability to work proactively with the FDA. 

Pharmaceutical education inculcates students with the values necessary to serve society as caring, ethical, learning professionals and enlightened citizens. It provides students with scientific fundamentals and fosters attitudes necessary to adapt their careers to changes in health care over a lifetime. It also encourages students prior to and after graduation to take active roles in shaping policies, practices, and future directions of the profession.

There are a number of potential future directions for the safety field and for system safety professionals. First, there are the international pressures of the global market and international standards that may apply to professionals.

Educators should take advantage of the availability of professional chemists and chemical engineers, who can speak to the students either in class or in some special forum. Contact with practicing scientists can help students put a human face on a possible future career. It is especially important that women and minority scientists also play a role in such outreach to students, to show that indeed the profession welcomes all with the talent to contribute. Some of this effort should be directed toward the early parts of K-12 education. The future of the chemical sciences may depend on the ability of educators to convince young students that it s cool to be excited by chemistry. ... 

The role to be played by hospital pharmacists should be determined by all health care professionals, not just by pharmacists themselves. The 1999 meeting of the Spanish Society of Hospital Pharmacists took this into account and a roundtable was held incorporating representatives of all health team members as well as a representative of patient opinion based on a survey of patients. Better information for patients, more integration of pharmacists in the health team, and more direct contact with patients seem to be the activities to be developed in the future. 

But the challenge presented by the trend toward larger farms, with the heavier investment in equipment and the employment of sophisticated farming methods, will go far beyond the supplying of more sophisticated chemicals and formulations. Whatever shape the farm of the future may take—family farm or corporate, specialized or multi-crop, contract production or free choice—the small farmer will become less and less influential in the key buying decisions. The decision-maker on purchases will be more and more a professional. His purchases will be made in large lots, and he will insist on buying as directly as possible...
