Production hockey stick effect

This lack of discipline arises from efforts to sweeten the income statement. It starts in the corner office where eyes focus on earnings-driven bonuses. It extends downward to the sales force and factory, taking the form of promotions, discounts, or just plain hustling of accounts. As a result, half the production goes out the door as the sun sets on the fiscal period. Some refer to this phenomenon as the hockey stick effect. Production activity turns up rapidly at the end of the period, resembling the blade of a hockey stick. [Pg.350]

The shift in the production implementation of synchrotron x-ray lithography caused by the hockey stick effect has had a profound effect on the performance required of a production-ready x-ray resist while initially, resolution requirements were set at 0.5 fim and later at 0.3 /u.m, one must now conclude that the resolution demonstrated under laboratory conditions must be of the order of 0.1 jLtm. Sensitivity and processing requirements have changed to a lesser degree whereas initially (14), a sensitivity of <100 mJ/cm was considered adequate, most users would nowadays probably prefer <50 mJ/cm. In foam injection-molded parts the anooth-skinned resilient foam produces a tough energy-absorbing structure that is being used as a wood substitute in athletic products such as lacrosse-stick heads and hockey-stick blades. Protective structures for helmets and automotive parts are under development. All are being produced in densities ranging for 0.35 to 0.7 g/cc (22 to 44 Ib/ft ). In those applications where added sti ess is desirable the use of glass or titanate fiber reinforcement with the foamed structure is very effective (6). [Pg.234]
