Product quality property modifiers

Unless otherwise indicated, chemical and physical properties are for the pure or production quality material. Properties of mixed, binary, thickened, or dusty agents, even those in solutions, will have physical and chemical properties that vary from the listed values. These variations will depend on the proportion of agent to other materials (e.g., solvents, thickener, etc.) and the properties of these other materials. If available, data on mixtures or modified agents (e.g., salts) are included. Apart from sodium hypochlorite and sodium bromide solutions, almost all other liquid biocides (or biocide intermediates) are nonoxidizer types. Most nonoxidizers are manufactured by specialist chemical companies, who sell these branded products for scores of different sanitizing or disinfection applications, of which cooling water system treatment is only one. These chemicals may be merely renamed (according to subregistration permits) or they may be blended with other biocides or inhibitors to form new and different products with accordingly modified properties. Some biocides may only be available from the primary manufacturer, often as extremely concentrated and hazardous materials. A range of properties can be measured and used to predict performance when selecting an appropriate base oil for use in formulation. Many of these properties are used as quality control checks in the manufacturing process to ensure uniformity of product quality. Although many of these properties are modified or enhanced by the use of additives, knowledge of the base oil characteristics, especially any limitations, is vital for the effective formulation of any lubricant. [Pg.9]

Conversion (upgrading) of bitumen and heavy oils to distillate products requires reduction of the MW and boiling point of the components of the feedstocks. The chemistry of this transformation to lighter products is extremely complex, partly because the petroleum feedstocks are complicated mixtures of hydrocarbons, consisting of 10 to 10 different molecules. Any structural information regarding the chemical nature of these materials would help to understand the chemistry of the process and, hence, it would be possible to improve process yields and product quality. However, because of the complexity of the mixture, the characterization of entire petroleum feedstocks and products is difficult, if not impossible. One way to simpHfy this molecular variety is to separate the feedstocks and products into different fractions (classes of components) by distillation, solubility/insolubility, and adsorption/desorption techniques. For bitumen and heavy oils, there are a number of methods that have been developed based on solubility and adsorption. The most common standard method used in the petroleum industry for separation of heavy oils into compound classes is SARA (saturates, aromatics, resins, and asphaltenes) analysis. Typical SARA analyses and properties for Athabasca and Cold Lake bitumens, achieved using a modified SARA method, are shown in Table 1. For comparison, SARA analysis of Athabasca bitumen by the standard ASTM method is also shown in this table.
