The new product committee is the body of choice for this task. It has the assignment to evaluate all new product ideas. It decides whether a new product idea should be taken up in research, namely, whether it becomes a project (see discussion below). 

In many companies there is an intrinsic lack of understanding between business development and R D. In order to overcome this impasse, the creation of a new product committee has proved very useful. The committee has the task of evaluating all new product ideas following a standard checklist (see Appendix A.2). It decides whether a new product idea should be taken up in research, and thus becomes a project (see also Section 6.2, on project initiation), and whether an ongoing research project should be abandoned. A warning signal would be if the chance of both a commercial and a technical process diminish continuously over a period of several months ...

The removal tests show important variations between products which do not influence the results because all penetrant can be washed easily. Some factors to consider when evaluating patent and trade secret protection include (/) the form and content of the technological advance, idea, development, or appHcation (2) the desired term of protection (J) the potential for the technological advance, idea, development, or appHcation to be the subject of a commercial product (4) work done previously (5) events which have pubHcized or pubHcly disclosed the technological advance, idea, development, or appHcation and (6) factors that may be critical to keeping the technological advance, idea, development, or appHcation confidential, and what events may necessitate disclosure. 

These ideas appear to merit careful consideration. Similarly, the use of nomograms to evaluate the intrinsic absorption rate constants for drugs that may be formulated into oral prolonged-release products may be of value [5],... 

A broader and more detailed evaluation can be done by performing a Life Cycle Analysis (LCA). The central idea of a LCA is that the environmental effects during the entire life cycle of a process are quantified. These environmental effects are caused by the use of fossil fuels for heating and production of electricity, the use of non-renewable raw materials for the production of materials and chemicals, and the emissions of pollutants to air, water and soil. These environmental effects can be subdivided further in various levels of detail. The five major effects mentioned are derived from the more general effects considered in the framework of the LCA.
