Free mono- and multilayer films may be adhesive- or extmsion-bonded in the laminating process. The bonding adhesive may be water- or solvent-based. Alternatively, a temperature-dependent polymer-based adhesive without solvent may be heated and set by cooling. In extmsion lamination, a film of a thermoplastic such as polyethylene is extmded as a bond between the two flat materials, which are brought together between a chilled and backup roU. [Pg.453]

Another proposed process employed injection molding in which starch and limited amounts of plasticizing water are heated under pressure to temperatures above the Tg and Tm to transform the native starch into a homogenous, destructured, thermoplastic melt. The process melt is then cooled to below the Tg of the system before pressure release to maintain the moisture content. Cooked but unexpanded thermoplastic starches (TPS) have wider applications, because of the fact that approx. 8% of water can be removed after the cooking process by devolatilization at 300 mbar, corresponding to a cooling by approx. 70 °C down to 100°C. The so-called solvent-based binder systems contain polymers which solvate or swell in a solvent (e.g. water, alcohol). Typical polymers used in extrusion are PEG, PVA, agar agar and cellulose. Thermoplastic materials are polymers which when heated, soften, melt or become more pliable, and harden during cooling in a reversible physical process. Materials in this class which are used quite often for ceramic processing are PE, PP, EVA, POM and PMMA. Thermosetting materials are polymers which can be melted only once and which, after melting, harden as more heat is added. Thermoset plastics which are used in the ceramic industry are phenolic resins and different silicon resins like polysiloxane. [Pg.324]

The use of thermoplastics material requires that the mould be maintained at a constant temperature - usually around 75 °C to 95 °C - to cool and solidify the material within the mould before the moulding can be ejected. This is achieved by circulating water through the mould and makes the process much faster than compression moulding. Although material is used in the sprue and runners, material wastage is low since it can be reused. [Pg.261]
